Meet the selkies 🦭

These are the fine folks who will help you put on a skin tight wetsuit, swim with you, and keep you safe out there.

Our team includes educators, commercial fishermen, photographers, divers, naturalists, and people who voluntarily put on a 7mm wetsuit and jump into cold water for fun. Some of us can identify obscure marine creatures at a glance. Others can tell you exactly where to find the best sea stars, nudibranchs, or kelp forests around Sitka. All of us are excited to share the underwater world with you.

We take safety seriously, but we don't take ourselves too seriously. Read on to meet the team!

  • Lea - Guide

Lea is an avid scuba and free diver originally from the Midwest but has called Alaska home for the last 5 years. After receiving her degree in Marine Biology she moved to the east coast to pursue a career underwater. From New Orleans to the Outer Banks of North Carolina to the Florida Keys before deciding she was ready for the cold waters of Southeast Alaska. Her career has been focused on scientific diving and invertebrate research but she now works primarily with salmon and serves as the Fisheries Biologist at the Sitka National Historical Park in town. She loves spending time outdoors and traveling the world when not working. Her favorite part about living in Sitka is being able to forage off the land and from the sea and the ease of access to incredible outdoor activities.

  • Peter - Guide

Peter lived in Sitka from 2016 to 2023. During his time here, he mainly worked in the high schools, first as the Americorp lunch lady at Pacific High School, then after as a recreation lead at the state run boarding high school, Mt. Edgecumbe. He loves to swim and hike and loves pizza. He recently moved to an agricultural part of Oregon, but he day dreams about coastal shores, tidal pools, coves, sea kelp forests, and the many critters that live beneath Sitka’s ocean surface. While he does enjoy harvesting abalones, rock scallops, and the occasional stray rock fish, he mostly enjoys to free dive for the sake of the gracefulness in being in the ocean. Catch him trying to blow bubble rings by your local ocean buoy. Peter’s goal for this summer is to be able to hold his breath for a really really long time.

  • Sheridan - Guide

Sheridan was born and raised in Sitka living the outdoor lifestyle. She enjoys fishing, hunting, and anything to do with the ocean! Sheridan is a regular subsistence and commercial fisherman. She now helps run the commercial salmon troller F/V Madrona with her boyfriend. She is from the Tlingit Kaagwaantaan Clan and was raised in the local cultural values. Sheridan is an intermediate Tlingit language speaker and loves to share her cultural knowledge with others! Ask her to teach you a Tlingit phrase on your tour! When she is not outdoors she is working as a local educator in the elementary grades. Sheridan's goal for this summer is to have a great time working outdoors absorbing all the adventure that Sitka has to offer!

  • Amber - Guide

Born and raised in southeast, Amber grew up aboard a steel sailboat and currently resides on her own sailboat, s/v Bonnie, with her grumpy cat Ula as her crew. She is a PADI rescue/advanced open water diver who loves snorkeling and freediving. Amber has explored diving and freediving opportunities on every continent (including antarctica brrr).

  • Heidi Nixon - Social Media Manager and Guide

Born and raised in eastern Canada, Heidi now calls Sitka home. She gets out snorkelling every month of the year and spends as much time as possible in the mountains skiing and hiking as well. One of her summer goals is to free dive to harvest crab!

  • Keira - General Manager

Hi, I’m Keira, a third year business student at the University of Southern California, learning about the importance of anti capitalist, decolonization practices from being inside the beast of it, while also getting Excel certifications, of course. I am getting a ceramics minor because clay seems to be the thing that finds its way back to me time and time again. I grew up in Jersey playing pretty much every sport but basketball is what stuck for me and I’ll still challenge just about anyone to a game of pickup. I got involved in Selkie Snorkels because of my interest in sharing tools that I’ve learned in business school with people who will use them for good and I’m beyond excited to be a part of this team.

  • Scott - Guide Emeritus

Scott has lived in Alaska for 34 years, moving from Homer to Sitka in January 2023 for the UAS Dive Semester program. After completing the dive program this spring, accumulating over 60 winter and spring dives, Scott remained in Sitka due to his desire to continue diving here. He is also a carpenter who enjoys creating furniture, art, and building boats. He brings a lifetime fascination of the water world to the tours, and is always learning the story of ocean ecology. Local scallops are a new favorite food. Scott has an affinity for Steller Sea Lions and is told they have an affinity for him.

  • Alyssa - Owner

Alyssa has been living in Sitka since 2015 and is originally from coastal Massachusetts. She is an avid snorkeler, scuba and free diver, and has received an Occupational Endorsement for Scientific Diving from the University of Alaska Southeast in addition to Rescue Dive training specific to cold Alaskan waters. When she isn't snorkeling, Alyssa works as a graphic designer, and has spent her summers working seasonally outdoors at a fish weir fifty miles north of Sitka, and also as a commercial fishing deckhand on troll and longline vessels. She helps co-lead a community bicycle cooperative in Sitka called the Salty Spoke, and is a strong believer in the power of cold water to heal any bad mood!

  • Derek - Founder & Owner

Derek is an avid adventurer and water enthusiast hailing from Los Angeles, CA. Committed to sustainability and fighting climate change, he has designed some of the world's largest battery energy storage systems. He has his PADI Scuba Diver certification and has hung out with a myriad of marine life in the reefs of Roatan, Hawaii, Malaysia, and Thailand. He captains a Pearson 31 sloop in the San Francisco Bay and dreams to sail to La Paz, Mexico on his blue water baby 'Les Bons Temps'.

  • Ellie - Founder & Owner

From Denver, CO, Ellie is a snorkeler, visual artist and filmmaker. She has had the chance to snorkel in lots of amazing places, including Svalbard, Cape Cod, Unalaska, the Galapagos, North Carolinian swamps and Lake Michigan. However Sitka is her favorite place to snorkel and she loves sharing the underwater world of Sitka Sound with others. Ellie worked as a commercial deckhand and engineer on small fishing boats in Sitka for several seasons, including fishing for crabs, sea cukes, and all the species of salmon. Ellie also sails a small salty schooner named the S/V Sirena.
