Freediving in Sitka, Alaska

When most people think of freediving, they imagine tropical reefs, warm water, and palm trees. Sitka offers something entirely different.

Nestled among the islands of Southeast Alaska, Sitka is home to thriving kelp forests, rocky reefs, colorful invertebrates, and some of the most unique cold-water freediving opportunities in North America. Beneath the surface, giant ribbons of bull kelp sway in the current, sea stars cling to rock walls, schools of fish dart through the fronds, and the occasional octopus may be hiding in the shadows.

For freedivers looking for adventure, Alaska's underwater world is every bit as spectacular as its mountains and forests.

What Makes Freediving in Sitka Unique?

The waters around Sitka are rich with life. Nutrient-filled currents support lush underwater ecosystems that can rival tropical reefs in biodiversity and beauty.

Freedivers in Sitka may encounter:

  • Towering bull kelp forests

  • Colorful sea stars and anemones

  • Crabs and shrimp

  • Schools of rockfish

  • Jellyfish

  • Octopus

  • Seabirds diving beneath the surface

  • Curious harbor seals

Visibility varies throughout the year, but on good days the underwater scenery can be truly spectacular.

Unlike many popular freediving destinations, Sitka offers a sense of exploration and solitude. It's not uncommon to spend an entire dive session without seeing another person in the water. Explore our photo gallery to see what the amazing underwater world looks like here!

Cold-Water Freediving

Freediving in Southeast Alaska requires appropriate thermal protection and preparation. Water temperatures typically range from the upper 40s to mid-50s Fahrenheit depending on the season and location.

Most divers use a 7mm wetsuit, hood, gloves, and booties to stay comfortable.

The colder water presents an additional challenge, but many freedivers find that it also makes the experience more rewarding. The quiet, the wildlife, and the dramatic underwater landscapes create a diving environment unlike anywhere else. Read more about Sitka’s history here.
