Sitka Tide Pool Hike
Discover the hidden world between the tides on a guided walk through one of the most incredible ecosystems on Earth.
Sitka sits on the Outer Coast of Southeast Alaska, where the open Pacific delivers a constant flow of nutrients, creating an intertidal zone of extreme biodiversity and abundance. Twice a day, the retreating tide reveals a hidden universe of vibrant sea stars, translucent anemones, scuttling crabs, and an extraordinary variety of marine life. Our guided tours bring this world to life.
Explore the intertidal zone around Sitka on a guided tide pool hike. This experience focuses on the unique marine life that is revealed at low tide along Southeast Alaska’s rocky shoreline.
This is a walking-based shore excursion with naturalist interpretation, designed for guests who want a closer look at intertidal ecosystems without getting in the water.
What to Expect
This guided hike takes place in a coastal intertidal area where conditions change daily with the tides. Guests will walk with a guide between tide pools, rocky shelves, and driftwood-strewn shoreline while learning about the plants and animals that live in this environment.
You can expect to see a variety of intertidal species depending on conditions, including sea stars, anemones, mussels, barnacles, small crabs, and marine algae.
Terrain varies and may include:
Uneven rock surfaces
Slippery algae-covered stones
Wet sand and gravel
Short sections of beach walking
Guests should be comfortable walking carefully on natural, uneven terrain.

Typical tours run approximately 1 hour, plus 30 minutes for pickup and dropoff, depending on tide conditions and group pace.
